Although it didn't originally have anything to do with their sound, the Cowboy Junkies' describe wound up ostensible pretty precise: their music was grounded in traditional state, blues, and ethnic music, nevertheless drifted along in a sleepy, narcotic haze that clearly bore the mold of the Velvet Underground. The immense bulk of their songs were unembellished and quiet, taken at lethargic tempos and filled with lackadaisical guitars and uninvolved, gossamer vocals courtesy of Margo Timmins. Over the late '80s and '90s, the grouping recorded a succession of critically acclaimed albums that establish favor in the alternative john Rock community.
The Cowboy Junkies were founded by guitarist/songwriter Michael Timmins and bassist Alan Anton (born Alan Alizojvodic), wHO number one played in concert in a Toronto-based band called the Hunger Project in 1979. They later touched to the U.K. and played with an new wave implemental kit called Germinal, merely eventually grew fatigue of the group's style and returned to Toronto in 1984. They started jam with Timmins' brother Peter on drums, and in 1985 they recruited a vocalist in sister Margo, at the time a societal proletarian who'd never sung dynasty publicly earlier. Dubbing themselves the Cowboy Junkies merely because the describe had a ring to it, they formed their possess independent label, Lament, and released their debut record album, Whites Off Earth Now!!, in 1986. Featuring only one original sung, the album was recorded victimisation only one mike, and although it was initially uncommitted alone in Canada, it helped them estate a major-label deal with RCA. Their first-class honours degree widespread release was 1988's The Trinity Session, which was recorded inside Toronto's Holy Trinity christian church in the span of one night -- once again exploitation only one mike. The Trinity Session became a rage hit, earning rave reviews from critics and substantial college radiocommunication airplay for tracks like "Misguided Angel" and their overcompensate of "Sweet Jane."
Now an resistance sensation, the Cowboy Junkies decided to centralize more on Michael Timmins' original material for the bigger-budget reexamination, 1989's The Caution Horses. The record album didn't drive quite as much of a conjure, although it helped maintain their cult fan base. 1992's fifty-fifty more rustic Mordant Eyed Man establish Timmins subsidence more than well into his songwriting part, which congeal the stage for 1993's Wan Sun, Crescent Moon. Hailed as their finest attempt since The Trinity Session, the record calibre more influence from careen and megrims, and returned the Junkies to critics' deary position. However, it besides proven to be their final album of new material for RCA. As the band left hand for Geffen, RCA issued the two-disc live digest two hundred More Miles and the best-of Studio. Meanwhile, the Junkies debuted for Geffen in 1996 with Repose It Down, a comparatively high-volume feat compared to their shimmering early work.
Next 1998's Miles from Our Home, the chemical group parted ways with Geffen and revived their own Latent mark. Their first-class honours degree release was the 2000 live album Waltz Across America, which was ab initio available alone through the band's website. They followed it a yr afterward with an album of all-new real, Open. One Soul Now followed in 2004. In 2005, the chemical group released Early twenty-first Century Blues, a aggregation of covers -- and deuce originals -- that dealt with "war, violence, fear, covetousness, ignorance and loss." Recorded in barely cinque days, it harkened back to The Trinity Session. Later that yr, the band was featured on the Beatles tribute record album This Bird Has Flown, which was produced by Jim Sampas and featured various artists including the Donnas and Dar Williams. Meanwhile, the band was busy collaborating with ocular creative person Enrique Martinez Celaya on a commemorative art book. Released in 2006, Cowboy Junkies XX was a retrospective bit intended to celebrate the band's 20th day of remembrance. It featured original watercolors by Celaya, handwritten sung dynasty lyrics, and photographs collected from the bandmembers' personal collections. The band released a new album called At the End of Paths Taken in the leap of 2007.
