Recruiting a bevy of oddball-celebrity sidemen and guest vocalists -- sampled or otherwise -- more or less clouded the backbone of the mathematical group, just David Barker and Simon Leonard recorded respective albums of elysian ambient-techno as Fortran 5. Indebted to such culprits of British capriciousness as Syd Barrett and Monty Python, the duo normally recorded with samplers fulgent, the unhallowed solution of which included bizarre pop collisions like Donna Summer and the Pretenders or the Champs' "Tequila" and thrash-metal. With roots in the Mute Records artists I Start Counting, the pair debuted with 1990's "Crazy Earth," a moony acid-house trail reckoning Barrett among its sample victims. Several singles followed during 1990-91, including "Nerve on the Line" with (springy) vocals by Miranda Sex Garden.
The debut Fortran 5 LP was Blues, released in 1991; it included contributions from Can's Holger Hiller, Orb's Kris Weston (aka Thrash) and far-famed DJ Colin Faver. The weirdest collaboration, however, was a overlay of Syd Barrett's "Motorcycle," with vocals obtained by posthumously sampling assorted lines from fabled comedian and Stock On film star, Sid James -- the radical was perhaps protected from a court case since producer on the academic term was Sid James' son Steve. Following the LP were several high profile singles, including "Face to the Future" (with springy vocals by Sly Stone grad Larry Graham) and "Iranian Blues" (with Neil Arthur of Blancmange).
The sample shenanigans continued on Fortran 5's second gear full-length, Bad Head Park. The "Sid Sings Syd" report was resurrected, with far-famed British role player Derek Nimmo inadvertently lending his vocals to a overlay of Derek & the Dominos' "Layla," spell Barker and Leonard as well called upon John Barry and media coverage of the Gulf War to heighten their compositions. The duo featured no collaborators and few samples on their third gear, the 1995 conception album Avocado Suite. Fortran 5 as well remixed Erasure, Inspiral Carpets, Miranda Sex Garden and Laibach.
