Oprah Named Most Powerful Celebrity

For the second straight year, Oprah Winfrey has been named the most powerful celebrity in the world, according to the 2008 Forbes Celebrity 100 Power List released on Wednesday (June 11).

It's the fifth time Winfrey has made it to the top of the list, which is "a power ranking based on both earnings and fame", and measures internet and press coverage, mentions on televison and radio and magazine covers.

Winfrey, who made an estimated US$275 million in the past 12 months, beat golfer Tiger Woods who came in at number 2, Angelina Jolie at number 3 and David Beckham featuring at number 5, due to the coverage he received for moving to the USA.

'Harry Potter' author J.K. Rowling topped the list as the biggest earner in the past 12-months after making US$300 million, but she doesn't feature in the media spotlight as heavily.

New to the list this year is rock band The Police who reformed for a world tour, 'The Daily Show' host Jon Stewart, movie and televison actor Steve Carell and MTV reality star Lauren Conrad.
