With a series of reggae-pop hits in the mid-'90s, Britain's Bitty McLean's smooth and classical vocal approach helped offset the gangster ragga coming then predominant in reggae and dancehall. Born in 1972, McLean was careworn to classical reggae at an early age, and by his teens he was acting in front of Birmingham's biggest sound systems. After enrolling in a sound and applied science class at a local college, McLean began functional with U.K. roots reggae legends UB40, first as an railroad engineer and finally as a producer and casual singer with the band. Behind the scenes he unbroken working on his own recordings, which paid off in 1994 when he placed triad songs in the U.K. charts, including covers of the Shirelles' "Dedicated to the One I Love" and Fats Domino's "It Keeps Rainin'." In 2004 he released the challenging On Bond Street KGN. JA., which featured McLean singing his possess melodies and lyrics over classic rocksteady backing tracks recorded by Tommy McCook at Duke Reid's legendary Treasure Isle studio apartment some 30 long time earlier.
