Lil Wayne Regains Billboard Top Spot From Coldplay After Two Weeks At #2
Four weeks after his latest LP debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 with more than 1 million copies sold, rapper Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III returns next week to the chart's peak, outselling Coldplay's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends — which has occupied the #1 spot for the last two weeks — by just 6,000 copies.
The two albums continue to be the year's biggest sellers, with Wayne's opus nearing the 1.7 million sales mark and Coldplay's record just passing 1.1 million in sales, according to data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan. Wayne owes much to the 40 percent sales hit Viva la Vida suffered, which allowed him to regain the chart's coveted top spot.
The lack of fresh, serious competition this week also worked in Wayne's favor. Just 12 new releases enter next week's chart, with the 50 Cent clique G-Unit's T.O.S.: (Terminate on Sight) bowing at #4 with 101,600 scans, and John Mayer's live set, Where the Light Is, following at #5 with 75,300 in week-one sales.
The rest of the top 10 is filled out by some chart regulars. The soundtrack to the Disney Channel's "Camp Rock" flick holds at #3 for a third-straight week, scanning 115,600 units, while the 28th installment in the Now That's What I Call Music! compilation juggernaut follows at #6 with 58,900 sold. The new single from Kid Rock's Rock N Roll Jesus, "All Summer Long," has helped the his LP climb slowly up the top 200; next week we'll see that effort return to the top 10 at #7, thanks to a 27 percent boost in sales, ending the week at 45,400. Usher's Here I Stand falls one spot to #8, selling another 41,500, while Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad rises one position to #9 with 40,000 sold. Finally, at #10, it's Disturbed's Indestructible, which sold another 37,400 copies.
Elsewhere on the chart, Tech N9ne's Killer makes its debut at #12, having sold 36,200 units, and Alkaline Trio's Agony & Irony enters at #13 with 36,100 scans. My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade Is Dead! bows at #22 with sales reported at 22,700, while Vanessa Hudgens' Identified follows at #23, selling 22,000 copies. Relient K's The Bird and the Bee Sides enters the chart at #25, thanks to 19,700 sold, and coming in at #20, with 17,200 scans, it's Jim Jones and the Byrd Gang's M.O.B. Meanwhile, rapper C-Murder's Screamin' 4 Vengeance debuts at #130 after selling 5,300 units.
